You listen at the door, but hear nothing, so you enter. A short 20 foot long corridor opens up into an oddly shaped room with two windows to the outside. An archway leads into another room to the north. A statue of a young girl playing with a dove is in the southeastern corner of the room. A large handcarved bookcase stands next to the northeastern wall. A dead potted tree sits in the northwest corner. Two wooden benches, one in front of each of the two windows facing southwest, have scrolls lying upon them. Two women stand next to one of the benches. Both women wear leather armor and carry swords. One of the women has just unrolled a scroll and is reading it.

You realize that the southern window is the same window that you saw someone climb up into a few hours ago. You assume it was one of these two. Leng rushes forward, recognizing the women. “Candella! Duchess! You’re alive! I feared for your lives after the goblins attacked us!” “Leng!” they both cry, pulling him into a somewhat awkward 3-way hug. A short reunion conversation begins. They learn about the secret door and stairs that Leng fell down in the dark, and about him meeting up with your party. Their tale is fairly short too. They fell back from the goblins and exited the lower level the way they came in (the goblins would not pursue them into the daylight), then camped for the night. The following day (today), they scaled the cliffs to the south first, climbing up into the overgrown garden, but then quickly retreated when they saw the Ubues. “We wanted no fight with those strange 3 headed monsters”, Candella says. They seem amused by your stories of your encounters with the Ubues. They next climbed up into this room, and have been relaxing and studying the papers that are here until you surprised them. They tell you that the papers are simply works of common reading and official paperwork of the palace. Candella politely asks if they could join your party, saying that they are not quite as tough or prepared for adventuring as they had originally thought themselves to be. Dutchess stresses her desire to accompany them, saying she fears that they have made a grave error in attempting to venture into the palace ruins by themselves. This may be hard to refuse, given that it appears to them that you have taken in Leng as part of your group. Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice.

While the potion of ESP is in effect, Krislee focuses on the two women’s thoughts. What she receives is a jumble of thoughts from both, so she has to focus on only one at a time. By focusing on Candella, she “hears” her sizing up each of the members of the party, trying to decide who she should steal from based on what items of value are visible. Switching quickly to Dutchess, she “hears” similar thoughts, but more focused on how she thinks she might be able to get away with picking pockets without getting caught. It appears that these two are mainly concerned with enriching themselves, not necessarily harming anyone in the party though. Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice.

Krislee keeps her distance from the women and searches the room, looking at the scrolls too. She says to the women, "If you aren't prepared, how can you tell us to take you on and do the work for you? We have a job to do, and there are dangerous creatures here. Why don't you go home so you don't put anyone, including yourselves, in harm's way?" She puts her hand on her sword in intimidation.

I'm endebted to your party for the rescue from the goblins Krislee, but I would ask at the least if my friends are to leave, that we at least help them safely to the exit?"

Candella eyes Krislee with newfound caution, and a little more respect. She says to her and Leng, “Nay, we will not be returning home anytime soon, and this is not the first time that others of non-human race have treated us with suspicion. However, seeing as you have kept Leng safer than we could, perhaps it is best that we go our separate ways. We will remain here for a few minutes longer. This will allow you and yours the opportunity to leave first, and provide us a safe exit afterward.” Candella and Duchess have placed their hands on their sword hilts in readiness too, but they are keeping them sheathed. As they are standing their ground, Krislee nor anyone else in your party will be able to get to the scrolls, papers, or the bookshelf to search any further. While looking around, Krislee is able to move to the archway, and look north into the next room. In this large bedroom is a massive canopy bed with thick dark red curtains, a long dresser with matching chest of drawers, and a large, stuffed easy chair. Three matching rugs lay side by side on the floor. There are no other exits from the room, which might make the confrontation with Candella and Duchess more difficult if you have to come back this way to exit. Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice. (edited)

Krislee steps into the room, and Hagar moves to the archway to provide some defense if necessary. As Krislee lifts the first rug to look underneath, the curtains on the bed begin to move as if someone were occupying the bed. Krislee and Hagar notice that there appears to be a person in the bed under the covers. Then the drawers on the dresser and chest of drawers begin to open and close on their own, all three rugs lift into the air of their own accord, and fly toward Krislee, as if attempting to knock her down. Since Krislee was able to make her Saving Throw vs. Spells (needed 15+ and she rolled a 15), she is able to quickly step back into the archway to avoid them. The easy chair dances east across the floor, then rises into the air, spins about for a few seconds, then crashes back to the floor where it originally stood. The rugs return to their original positions, all of the drawers slam shut, the bed curtains stop moving, and the man-like form under the covers disappears. The room looks like it did only moments before, empty and harmless. Krislee turns around and notices that everyone else’s jaws are on the floor. Candella and Duchess exchange a look, and Candella says, “That’s it. I knew this place was haunted. Our luck has been ill so far, with naught but foul monsters, no treasure, and empty or useless paperwork being all that remains here. I have no stomach to confront angry spirits too. You have your wish, madam, I think it’s time we head home.” She nods to Leng, “You are welcome to come with us too of course, since we brought you here.” Leng declines, opting to remain with the party. Candella pulls out a rope and grappling hook, hooks it to the window sill, and asks Leng, “Could you be so kind as to unhook this for us once we reach the ground?” Leng agrees, and much quicker than expected, both Candella and Duchess hop out the window and climb swiftly down the ropes to the ground at the bottom of the cliffs. Leng unhooks the rope, tosses it down to them, then they bid farewell with a silent wave. Krislee gets her chance to look through the scrolls, only to find that they are as described by the two thieves: either empty, or just useless palace paperwork. This large ball room appears to have at one time been decorated in silver, red, and blue. Two huge fireplaces, one on the west and the other on the east wall, hold the petrified remains of beasts that were once cooked in them; a couple of pigs, a deer, and a side of beef. To the north is what appears to be an overgrown balcony, seen through large glass windows leading from the ball room. Several of the windows are broken. The bright sunlight from outside illuminates the full room. Two passageways to the east are collapsed and blocked by rubble. There is another set of double doors on the west wall just north of the huge fireplace. A huge ornate brass bell hangs down from the ceiling and is supported by 4 columns of white marble (Yes, huge! See the outline of it is the circle touching each of the columns). Whistling sounds can be heard. They have a very pleasant melody. Two pale, shadowy apparitions are dancing to the melody. The two figures are dressed in clothing that was popular more than three hundred years ago. (edited)

Continuing up to the chair level, you see that this is alcove high above a room below. The bars prevent you from passing into the room beyond, but you sense that the double doors in the corridor you just came from will allow entrance into the room. There appears to be a raised stage of some sort, but whether it is the narrow bars, the tricky torchlight, or some magic at work, it is hard to really see much of the room below from here. The hallway continues north beyond your torchlight. You enter the double doors into an empty temple room, which is uneasily quiet. The dais on the west wall appears harmless, but seems to change, in some way, each time it is looked at. (The stairs seem to appear and disappear. The holy symbol seems to move about on the wall). The bars high in the to the alcove you were in earlier can be seen high in the south wall. Faint whistling can be heard from time to time. It seems to almost have a melody. As Krislee approaches the dais, the odd effect of the world around her seems to change and becomes much stronger. She feels sick to her stomach, and the odd changes are quicker in pace. To Krislee, the height of the dais now seems to change about once every second. The stairs shift from the sides of the dais to the front, then disappear and reappear on the side again and cycle again. The holy symbol looks like it is dancing all over the west wall. Poking the dais with her sword doesn't affect it at all, although Krislee almost loses her balance from the movement of the sword and the world around her. The whistling sound also increases in tempo. The rest of the party are concerned about Krislee, as she appears to be very dizzy, off balance, and stepping uneasily around. They grab her carefully and pull her back away from the dais. To Krislee, the effect slows down immediately, and she is left feeling only slightly queasy, as if she is now on solid ground after a long sea voyage. Catharandamus looks slightly concerned. “I do not generally search without my servants, they are through that same secret door I came through moments ago. However, your party looks strong and loyal to you, I’m sure we can search without them for now. Besides, the twin dwarves are just paid retainers, and I grow weary of the werebear’s affection for me, which I have to constantly pretend to have in return for her too.” He rolls his eyes as he says this. “They mean nothing to me, let me just grab my magic mace and we can go.” He says this last sentence under his breath, as if he doesn’t want them to hear through the secret door. He grabs the mace from the hanger between the two windows and walks back into the temple room expecting everyone to follow. “Ignore the dais and the visual trickery, it’s just a spell I cast on it to dissuade undesirables from entering my private chambers,” he says as he walks by. He pauses before the northern set of double doors and waits for everyone to catch up. He then says, “I am convinced that the Princess Argenta hid the gem somewhere in the upper palace. I have found several secret rooms down in the dungeon, one of which contains her diary. It mentions that she kept the gem in the palace living quarters in a teakwood jewel case. You reach the corner at the end of the north/south hallway, right next to the door that the Ubue walked out of a while ago when you were last near here, and peek around it. The Ubues that used to be guarding the throne room doors are nowhere to be seen. You note that there is a portcullis in the south wall that is closed, the one at the top of the stairs into the garden. The hallway continues into the darkness to the east of the throne room doors. Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice.

Krislee motions for them to quietly continue to the portcullis and see if they can see anything, if not, then move toward the throne room doors and listen before entering.

You move quietly to the portcullis, then forward to the throne room doors. There is no one in sight. The hallway continues to the east out of sight. Shadow "chooses" that moment to shape-shift into a panther. Other than that, nothing else occurs. You enter the throne room quietly, and proceed to the front of the dais. Shadow jumps up onto the throne, purrs, curls up, and falls asleep. There is no one else in the throne room, and it looks like it did the last time you were in here. Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice.

"Hmmm, Shadow changed into a panther last time we were in here too. I think we ought to search this room carefully. I'll start with the throne."

Searching the throne disturbs Shadow slightly. She yawns, stretches, turns back into a cat, then curls up and falls right back to sleep, You find nothing out of the ordinary or different with the throne or the room. Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice.

Krislee considers for some time. "It may be close, but not right in this room. What about a secret door? Let's check the hallway there for other secret entrances we may have missed," she says pointing the way to the secret door leading out of the throne room.

You find a secret door just a few feet down the corridor in the west wall! You open the secret door, and see a small room. A single pedestal with a glass case on top of it stands in the middle of this room. A small brown box with strange runes carved into it is inside the glass case. Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice.

"Dear friend, do you know what those runes mean?" Krislee asks Catharandamus. She gently nudges the top of the glass case with her sword.

You all move into the room, and close the secret door behind you. Before Catharandamus can answer Krislee’s question, and as she nudges the glass case with her sword, two ghosts appear. It is clear that one is the Lady Argenta, and that the other is her knight. The Lady Argenta screams at you, “How dare you disturb my royal self and Sir Ellis the Strong in our resting place! My Lady’s Heart shall not be disturbed!”, and they both attack. Shadow's fur stands on end, and she transforms into a panther, ready to attack with a yowl and hisses! Next Step: Describe your attacks for the next two rounds of combat and roll .combat and .{weapon} dice. (edited)

OK, I'm really killing this game off now - it's too depressing that I haven't spent the time to wrap it up, and it's not likely that I will have more time anytime soon. Essentially, Lady Argenta and the knight are both ghosts, so magic weapons are needed to harm them. If you killed them, the ruby in the glass case is the real "My Lady's Heart", and is worth 10,000 gp. The version of this adventure that I was running you all through was not just the recalled version (orange cover) - I combined things from the released version (green cover) in it as well, as much of the adventure in the orange cover version was incomplete. You can read about the recall here: https://acaeum.com/ddindexes/modpages/b3.html, and here: http://www.pandius.com/b3_intro.html. You can download the full orange cover version here: http://www.pandius.com/b3_orig.pdf, and the green cover version here: https://img.4plebs.org/boards/tg/image/1410/58/1410588922833.pdf It was fun while it lasted, thanks everyone!
